Festivals & Culture
Grenada is the Spice Isle of the Caribbean โ but our spices are more than just nutmeg and cinnamon. Our people are warm and inviting, our music is infectious, our food is mouthwatering, and our festivals are second to none. The crown jewel of Grenada's culture is Spicemas โ an explosion of vibrant colour, mesmerizing music, intoxicating rhythms, swaying costumes and revelling masqueraders, all done in true Grenadian style.
Spicemas & Carnival
No one does carnival quite like Grenada. As the last Caribbean Carnival held every August, Spicemas offers experiences that are truly out of the ordinary โ from the iconic Jab Jab masqueraders covered in black oil wearing horned helmets, to the spectacular Parade of the Bands with colourful costumes, feathers and jewels.
The early morning street parade J'ouvert at daybreak is followed by Monday Night Mas with glowsticks and DJ trucks. On Carriacou, their Carnival features the unique Shakespeare Mas โ masqueraders in masks reciting Shakespeare's plays in friendly duels. Truly one-of-a-kind.
Music & Cultural Festivals
From the ancestral African Big Drum rhythms of the Carriacou Maroon Festival to the infectious soca beats of the Pure Grenada Music Festival, music pulses through every corner of the tri-island state year-round.
The Grenada Drum Festival in Tivoli celebrates the community's rich drumming heritage, while Carriacou's Parang Festival blends traditional Christmas carols with comical songs reflecting on the year's events.
Food & Drink Festivals
Grenada's unique chocolate story comes alive during the annual Chocolate Festival. Visit organic cocoa plantations, make your own chocolate, and indulge in chocolate-inspired cuisine. With six local chocolate companies producing rich organic chocolate, Grenada is truly a chocolate lover's paradise.
The new Lobster & Lambie Festival in Carriacou celebrates the culinary heritage of the sister islands, while Fish Friday in Gouyave transforms a fishing village into an open-air food festival every Friday night.
Sailing & Regattas
The love of the sea, generations of boat-building skills, and a natural inclination to compete have made Grenada's regattas among the most exciting in the Caribbean. From international yacht racing to traditional hand-built workboat races, the waters around the tri-island state come alive year-round.
Grenada Sailing Week attracts professional and amateur sailors from around the world, while the Carriacou Regatta โ running since 1965 โ is the Caribbean's longest-running regatta festival with traditional wooden sailboats.
Heritage & Community Events
Grenada's cultural traditions run deep โ from the Saraka thanksgiving feast honouring West African ancestors to Independence Day celebrations on February 7th. Community events like Church Harvests and local village festivals offer visitors an authentic, immersive experience.
The Jambalasee Festival celebrates the emancipation of slaves with J'ouvert morning body-painting rituals, while National Heroes Day and Thanksgiving Day in October honour Grenada's history and heritage.
